we hope this message finds you well and we thank-you for your patience!

The 12th IMPR will take place 8-11 September 2021 in Kiel. 

The meeting is planned as hybrid event, allowing both in-person and remote participation. Updates concerning the possibility to attend in-person will follow in 2021, as corona regulations and travel restrictions in Germany and elsewhere change constantly.

This time the IMPR will be exceptionally integrated within the 27th Annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA), with theme: “Widening horizons” (EAA2021). The EAA annual meetings attract hundreds of scientists dealing with different aspects of archaeology and related fields of study of the human past. We consider this a chance for growth, visibility and exchange for the phytolith community.

At the meeting you will find several "IMPR-sessions", which will cover the topics previously announced and welcome contributions ranging from various aspects of phytolith research and applications. The sessions abstracts will be available in December for you to read more and chose where you prefer to send your contribution. The call for abstract is open between 16 December 2020 and 11 February 2021.

We hope that this unique format for the 12th IMPR will lead to a fruitful exchange beyond the respective discipline boundaries, while maintaining the possibilities for expert discussion among specialists, and widening our horizons.

Towards positive synergies and wider horizons – A joint meeting of the International Phytolith Society and the European Association of Archaeologists in Kiel, September 2021

We hope this email finds you well, despite the challenging conditions the world is facing in the ongoing pandemic.

We would like to update you about the 12^th International Meeting of Phytolith Research. We are thankful for your patience and understanding for the silence in the last months, during which we were re-arranging the meeting after cancellation.

The 12^th IMPR will be hosted on 8–11 September 2021 (Wednesday–Saturday) by the Institute of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archaeology of Kiel University in Kiel, Germany. In addition, for those who are interested, scientific excursions will take place on 7 and 12 September 2021 (Tuesday and Sunday).

The IMPR is for now planned as a hybrid meeting, allowing both in-person and remote participation. Updates on the possibility of a live event will follow in early 2021, as corona regulations and travel restrictions in Germany and elsewhere are updated.

News | This year, the IMPR will be exceptionally integrated within the 27^th Annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA). This year’s EAA meeting, titled “Widening horizons”, was scheduled at Kiel University (https://www.e-a-a.org//eaa2021). Every year the EAA meeting attracts over thousands of scientists dealing with different aspects of archaeology and related fields of study of the human past, building a very broad and diverse platform for scientific discussion. In this frame, the organizers and EAA board are welcoming the phytolith community for an integrated 2021 event. As the organizing committee of the 12^th IMPR, together with the IPS board, we consider this a chance for growth, visibility and exchange for the phytolith community.

Sessions | Following a bottom-up approach, the participants of EAA meetings can submit session proposals. In order to follow the IMPR tradition, we already submitted the sessions covering the topics previously announced on the 12^th IMPR website. The sessions, labeled “IMPR-session title”, are listed below. In principle, the IMPR-sessions will not overlap with each other. The whole committee of 12^th IMPR should be considered session organizer.

Registration and memberships | The logistics of the event will follow the procedures of the EAA annual meeting as explained on the website: https://www.e-a-a.org/EAA2021/General_Info.

Important: A major change consists in the necessity to create an EAA account to register in order to submit abstracts for contributions and to participate. For the EAA account, the payment of the EAA annual membership is required (https://www.e-a-a.org/EAA2021/membership ). However, in exceptional circumstances, this is not mandatory if one participates in IMPR-sessions only. If you are interested in presenting only in IMPR-sessions, and therefore wish to be exempted from the payment of EAA membership, it is necessary to send an email to 12impr@email.uni-kiel.de with subject “EAA membership exemption”, specifying your name, affiliation and EAA membership ID number in the message. To obtain an EAA ID number, you will have to create an account, without proceeding to payment, and to log in and out at https://eaa.klinkhamergroup.com/eaa2021/. We will need this information for the EAA Office which will validate your EAA user account and allow you to register to the Annual Meeting. For participants interested in further EAA sessions in addition to IMPR-sessions, EAA membership should be valid or updated.

The following dates are particularly important:

• The call for papers/posters opens on 16 December 2020 and closes on 11 February 2021.
• The call for travel grants applications opens on 29 March 2021 (https://www.e-a-a.org/EAA2021/grants ).
• The deadline for early bird EAA membership fee is 31 March 2021.
• The deadline for early bird Annual Meeting registration fee is 6 April 2021.

27th EAA Registration policy

The 27th EAA Annual Meeting is conceived as a hybrid event, allowing both in-person and remote participation; the complete academic program will be available online. Flat registration fees (see below) apply to both in-person and remote participation. Registration fees may be reviewed if onsite participation becomes impossible due to EU- / state- / institutionally imposed restrictions and/or the 27th EAA Annual Meeting is held in online format only.

Any individual cancellation must follow the cancellation policy (see below).

Please note that all Annual Meeting participants have to be current (2021) EAA members and have to register (pay Annual Meeting registration fee) for the Annual Meeting. If you are not a current EAA member, you will be asked to choose from membership categories first and your membership fee will be placed into your cart (you can pay both registration fee and membership fee in a single transaction).

If you want to present a contribution (talk/poster) to IMPR-Sessions, you need to be IPS member. If you will participate exclusively to IMPR-Sessions, you can be exempted from payment of the EAA membership. In any case, you need to create an account as EAA member. How to get to Kiel

Arrival by train:

Kiel can be easily reached by train (“Kiel Hbf”). Train connections and schedules can be found on the website of the Deutsche Bahn. Usually you have to change trains in Hamburg Central Station, although a few trains a day continue directly to Kiel.

From the train station you can take the bus lines 61, 62, 81, 50 and 60S (Single ticket/ Einzelfahrkarte costs about € 2.60). You can buy the ticket by the bus driver, please bring cash. The closest bus stop to the Workshop Venue are “Leibnizstraße” or “Bremerskamp”. For detailed information on the route plans, please check the Kieler Verkehrsgesellschaft website.

Arrival by plane:

Hamburg International Airport is the closest airport, 85 km away from Kiel.

To reach Kiel from there it is a 60 ‐ 80 min. trip by:

• the shuttle taxi Kielexx: http://www.vineta.net/airport/kielexx.php
• the airport bus “Kielius”: http://www.bahn.de/autokraft/view/angebot/kielius/en-kielius-ueb.shtml

The Kielexx will bring you directly to your hotel address; this service doesn’t work on Saturdays. In the case of the Kielius bus, we recommend you to get a “Kielius‐Kombi‐Karte” from the bus driver. With this ticket you can combine travelling by Kielius and by taxi. In this case, a taxi will wait for you at the final bus stop in Kiel. You can buy your ticket as a “return” ticket, so the taxi will pick you up from the hotel too, when you go back to the airport. 

Arrival by car:

From the south, follow freeways (Autobahn) A7 and A215 via Hamburg and Neumünster to Kiel. From the north, follow freeways (Autobahn) A7 and A210 via Flensburg and Rendsburg to Kiel.

Local transport

The closest bus station to the workshop venue are “Leibnizstraße” and “Bremerskamp”, which are reached by the bus lines 81, 62, 61, 60S and 50. Single ticket/ Einzelfahrkarte costs about € 2.60. You can buy the ticket by the bus driver, please bring cash.

SESSIONS

1) Phytolith morphology, nomenclature, taxonomy and morphometry

The session “Phytoliths morphology, nomenclature, taxonomy and morphometry” welcomes contributions in the study of phytolith taxonomy, including the application of the ICPN 2.0. Within the session we look also for studies that enhance interpretations based on phytolith morphometric advances besides morphological characteristics.

2) Phytoliths as a proxy for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction

Within this session “Phytoliths as a proxy for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction” contributions are welcome that use phytoliths by themselves thogether with other proxies, for palaeoecological reconstruction of past environments and vegetation history.

3) Phytoliths in integrated archaeobotanical and ethnoarchaeological studies

The session “Phytoliths in integrated archaeobotanical and ethnoarchaeological studies” is dedicated to the application of phytoliths in archaeological contexts and materials. Contributions that show comparison of the phytolith record with the records from other archaeobotanical materials (starch, macrofossils, charcoal, pollen and NPPs, plant biomarkers), as well as with archaeological and ethnographic insights, are particularly welcome.

4) Phytoliths in geoarchaeology and micromorphology

In the session “Phytoliths in geoarchaeology and micromorphology” we look for contributions that present the application of phytolith analysis in micromorphology. In addition, issues of phytolith taphonomy and deposit formation influencing the phytolith record are welcome. A microscopy workshop related to this session will be also organised.

5) Phytolith formation, quantification and role in modern plants

Studies on the processes of phytoliths formation and on taphonomy through experimental approaches and modern reference collections are at the core of the session “Phytoliths formation, quantification and role in modern plants”.

6) Phytoliths and the biogeochemical cycles of silicon and carbon

The session “Phytoliths and the biogeochemical cycles of silicon and carbon" welcomes studies of biogeochemical components within phytoliths and the application of isotopic analysis and radiocarbon dating based on the phytolith records.

Travel grants

To support the participation of young scholars and of researchers from emergent countries, some travel grants of 300€ are available for presenting authors.
Elegible candidates are master students and PhD students (countries A, B), as well as postdoctoral researchers (countries B). 
The grant can be used to pay the conference fee, travel expenses and accommodation connected with the workshop (excluding the conference dinner). Application for the travel grant is possible only for presenting participants via the abstract form until the 15th of May 2020. Communication about the travel grants will be given to applicants after abstract acceptance, indicatively by the 15th of June 2020.

Cancellations between 16.06 – 15.07.2020: full refund less € 30 handling fee

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

We welcome oral and poster presentations. Abstracts for papers or posters addressing one or more of the six sessions can be submitted until the 15th of May 2020. Acceptance notifications will be sent by the 15th of June 2020.

Workshop language is English. Abstracts should be of max. 250 words. In case of multiple authors, please add an asterisk (*) after the name of the corresponding author.

If you would like to give more than one contribution, please submit one abstarct form for each contribution.

Talks and posters 

Indicatively, the oral presentations may last max. 15 minutes (incl. discussion). Key-note presentations may last 30 minutes (incl. discussion).

For posters, only portait format is allowed for a maximal size within din A0 (width 841 mm x height 1189 mm / width 33.1 x height 46.8 in). 

If there are too many applications, the organisers reserve the right to suggest a change from required talks to posters.
